Kulhudhuffushi City
Kulhudhuffushi, located in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, is one of the largest inhabited islands in northern Maldives, covering 247 hectares. It is the third most populated area in the country, with a registered population of 10,857 residents as of July 2024, and a total population of around 13,000, including migrants. The island boasts key infrastructure, including a regional hospital serving the northern region, three government schools providing education from foundation to higher secondary levels, and three higher education institutions: a Maldives National University campus, Villa College, and MI College. Additionally, the island has a domestic airport that opened in 2018, two local harbors, and an international seaport, along with sports facilities such as a zone stadium, two football grounds, and a swimming track.
Economically, Kulhudhuffushi is a major hub in the northern Maldives, with thriving retail and wholesale businesses, a growing construction industry, and regular sea transportation to Male'. The island also hosts regional branches of major banks and government institutions. Culturally, it is known for its friendly, hardworking residents and traditional industries such as boat building, fishing, and rope making, the latter being a craft predominantly practiced by women. Kulhudhuffushi is renowned for local products like "Kulhudhuffushi Haalu" (a sweet) and "Masbondi" (fish product).
The island's natural attractions include “Mashikulhi”, the only clay mangrove in the Maldives, which is surrounded by Brevi trees, making it a distinctive natural feature. Despite its modern development, Kulhudhuffushi retains strong cultural traditions, with numerous festivities and cultural events still celebrated throughout the year.
