2004 ވަނަ އަހަރުގެ ޑިސެމްބަރު މަހުގެ 26 ވީ އާދީއްތަ ދުވަހު ހެނދުނު 9:23 ގައި ރާއްޖެއަށް ކުރިމަތިވި ސުނާމީ ކާރިސާއަކީ މިހާތަނަށް ދިވެހިރާއްޖެ ދުށް މިފަދަ އެންމެ ހިތާމަވެރި ކާރިސާ އެވެ. މިކާރިސާއަށް މިއަދު މިފުރުނީ 15 އަހަރެވެ. މި ކާރިސާގައި ރާއްޖޭގެ 9 ރަށެއް ފިޔަވައި އެހެން ހުރިހާ ރަށަކަށް ސުނާމީގެ އަސަރުކޮށްފައިވެއެވެ. މީގެ ތެރެއިން 4 ރަށް އެއްގޮތަކަށްވެސް ދިރިނޫޅެވޭވަރަށް ހަލާކުވެގޮސްފައިވެއެވެ. އެއީ، ރ.ކަނދޮޅުދޫއާއި، ތ.ވިލުފުއްޓާއި، ދ.ގެމެންދޫ އަދި މ.މަޑިފުށްޓެވެ. އަދި މީގެ އިތުރުންވެސް 23 ރަށަކަށް ވަރަށްބޮޑެތި ގެއްލުންތަކެއް ލިބިފައިވެއެވެ.
މި ހިތާމަވެރި ކާރިސާގައި ދިވެހީންގެ 82 މީހަކު ވަނީ ނިޔާވެގޮސްފައެވެ. އޭގެތެރޭގައި ކުޑަކުދީންނާއި، އަންހެނުންނާއި، ފިރިހެނުން ހިމެނެއެވެ. އަދި މި ކާރިޘާގައި ވީނުވީ ގޮތެއް ނޭގި 26 މީހަކު ވަނީ ގެއްލިފައެވެ. ރާއްޖޭގެ އާބާދީގެ 13000 އަށްވުރެ ގިނަ ރައްޔިތުންގެ ގެދޮރު މުޅިން ސުންނާފަތިވެ ހާލުގައި ޖެހި، ބައެއް ރަށްތައް މުޅިން ހަލާކުވެ ފަޅުވެދިޔައެވެ. ބައެއް ރަށްރަށުން ވަގުތީގޮތުން މީހުން ބާލަން ޖެހުނެވެ.
